How to Release Materials Based on Conditions

Sometimes you may want your students to "deal" with a topic or quiz before they take another step in their learning. Maybe they need a little remedial instruction or they need something to "set the stage" for the next subject.

Release conditions allow you to create a custom learning path through the materials in your course. When you attach a release condition to an item, students cannot see that item until they meet the associated condition. For example, you could attach a release condition to the second topic in your course's content area that would hide that topic until users viewed the topic before it. Or you create a condition that required users to view a content topic before gaining access to a quiz, or one that required them to post a message to a discussion topic before they could see a content module. If you attach multiple conditions to an item, users must meet all conditions before they can access the item. For example, you could require users to visit three content topics before gaining access to an associated quiz.

Conditional Release is a powerful tool that allows you to orchestrate the sequence of a powerful learning symphony. The following steps present those necessary to employ the conditional release of materials. You will be amazed at its simplicity and power.

Step One: Go to the item for which you want the release based upon certain conditions. For our example, we are releasing an assignment in our dropbox only after our students have read an item in the Content area.

Follow your same procedure for creating the dropbox folder. The difference is on the Restrictions tab, click the button "Create and Attach" release conditions.

Create Conditional Release

Step Two: After clicking the create and attach conditions button, a new screen will open with the title "Create a New Release Condition." In the "Select Condition Type" drop down menu, scroll down to Content, and select "Content Topic Visited." This means students will not see the link to a new dropbox assignment until they have read or clicked on some content topic. Our next job will be to tell Online Classroom which topic we want the student to visit to complete the conditions before the link will become visible.

Select the Condition

Step 3: In this example, we are given a screen displaying all of our Content. From the list, we select the item that must be "visited" to fulfill the condition. We are selecting a crossword puzzle.

Select the topic to be visited!

Step 4: Click the create button and congratulations, you have conditionally released an item!
